Tips & best practices

Use smart search
Don't scroll through categories - just type the unit name. Smart search finds it across all categories and switches automatically. It's much faster!
Use the swap button
Need to reverse direction? Click the swap button instead of manually changing both dropdowns. One click reverses the entire conversion.
Match number format to your region
Set the number separator to match your region. This makes it easier to copy values into documents without reformatting.
Use decimals freely
Enter decimals like 2.5 or 0.75. The converter handles any precision. Results show appropriate decimal places.
Know US vs UK differences
US and UK gallons are different (3.785L vs 4.546L). US and UK tons are different. Always verify which system your source uses.
KB vs KiB matters
This converter uses binary (×1024) for KB/MB/GB. Storage manufacturers often use decimal (×1000), which is why a "500 GB" drive shows about 465 GB in your OS.
Calories vs kilocalories
Food "Calories" (capital C) are actually kilocalories (kcal). A "200 Calorie" snack is 200 kcal = 200,000 cal. The Energy category handles both.
Copy results easily
Select the result value and copy it. The number separator formatting is preserved, so it matches your document style.

Frequently asked questions

When you type in the unit dropdown search box, it searches ALL units across ALL 10 categories - not just the current category. If you select a unit from a different category, the tool automatically switches to that category. You don't need to manually select the category first.
US gallon = 3.785 liters. UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters. The UK gallon is about 20% larger. Always check which system your recipe or measurement uses - especially important for fuel economy comparisons.
US ton (short ton) = 2000 pounds = 907 kg. UK ton (long ton) = 2240 pounds = 1016 kg. Metric tonne = 1000 kg = 2205 pounds. When someone says "ton", always clarify which one they mean.
This converter uses KB = 1024 bytes (binary standard). Storage manufacturers often use decimal (1000-based) for marketing, which is why a "500 GB" drive shows about 465 GB in your OS. The binary vs decimal distinction explains the apparent "missing" space.
Different regions use different formats: US uses comma (1,000), Europe uses dot (1.000) or space (1 000). Use the Number separator dropdown to match your preferred format.
Conversions use standard precise conversion factors. Results are typically accurate to many decimal places - more precision than needed for practical purposes. For scientific work, the tool uses the official SI conversion factors.
No, currency requires live exchange rates that change constantly. This converter handles fixed physical units only. For currency conversion, use a dedicated currency converter with real-time rates.
Lowercase "calorie" (cal) is a small unit. Uppercase "Calorie" (Cal) used in food = kilocalorie (kcal) = 1000 calories. A "200 Calorie" food label means 200 kcal. The Energy category supports both.
Yes! As soon as you type a number, the result appears. There's no "Convert" button to click. This makes it fast to try different values or units.
No, you can only convert within the same category (e.g., length to length). Converting between categories (e.g., weight to volume) isn't physically meaningful unless you know the material's density. The smart search helps you find units, but the actual conversion stays within one category.
