Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a color?

Use the hue slider and the color area to choose a shade. The five format values update after the change. Pick from screen uses the browser eyedropper where that feature is available.

Can I paste a HEX code into the picker?

The five format fields are read-only outputs. Choose a color with the picker, a harmony swatch or the supported screen eyedropper, then copy its HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV or estimated CMYK value.

Can I pick a color from my screen or an image?

Pick from screen opens the browser eyedropper on supported desktop browsers. For a photo, open the Image extractor page using the mode links and select an image.

What are color harmonies?

The picker offers complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, tetradic and monochromatic combinations. Click a suggested swatch to use it as the current color.

Are the CMYK values ready for printing?

CMYK is a mathematical estimate from the RGB color. It does not use an ICC profile for a printer, ink or paper. Ask your printer for the required profile before preparing print artwork.

Is the color picker free?

Yes. The MORELESS color picker is free and does not require an account.

Where are recent colors saved?

Up to 20 recent history entries are saved in this browser through IndexedDB. They are not synchronized between devices, and clearing the site storage can remove them.

How do I open the other color tools?

Use the mode links above the picker. Each related task has its own page, including the image extractor, palette builder, gradient generator and contrast checker.

Technical details

Color conversion

The picker uses RGB values to produce HEX, HSL, HSV and an estimated CMYK conversion in the browser. Displayed values are rounded. The output fields show values for copying and do not accept pasted codes.

Screen eyedropper

Pick from screen uses the EyeDropper API. Availability depends on the browser and device, and the feature requires a secure context. The selected screen color is returned as an sRGB HEX value.

Harmony calculations

Complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary and tetradic suggestions rotate the base hue. Monochromatic suggestions vary lightness. These combinations are starting points, so check text contrast separately.

Browser storage

Recent entries are stored in IndexedDB under the shared Color Studio tool. History is limited to 20 entries. The MORELESS picker is free without an account, and browser storage can be cleared or become unavailable.
