How to pick a color from an image

Docs

Click Select image and choose an image. Wait for the picture and extracted colors to appear. Your original file stays unchanged. Use a clear image with the colors you want to inspect.

Pick colors from a photo

Preview magnifier

Use the magnified preview to choose a spot and read its color. Large images are resized for processing, so the sampled value can differ from the original pixel.

Automatic palette extraction

Choose a color count from 1 to 20. K-means groups sampled RGB values, with optional filtering of near-black and near-white pixels.

Browser image decoding

Open formats your browser can decode, such as PNG, JPG and WebP. HEIC and HEIF use a local decoder fallback when needed. Decoding support varies by format and device.

Animated GIF frames

Play, pause or step through GIF frames, then pick or extract colors from the selected frame.

Local image processing

The selected image is processed in this browser. It is not sent to a conversion server. Large files and animations can require substantial memory.

Palette exports

Download a palette as PNG, JPG, SVG or JSON, or copy the values as CSS variables. Exports contain the selected colors, not a copy of the original image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick a color from an image?

Choose an image, move over the preview to inspect a spot and click it. The selected color appears in the format fields for copying. The preview may be resized, so this is not an exact original-pixel measurement.

How do I get a HEX code from a photo?

Open the photo and click the area whose color you need. Use the copy button beside HEX. You can also read RGB, HSL, HSV and estimated CMYK for the selected color.

Can I extract a palette automatically?

Yes. Choose a requested color count from 1 to 20. The extractor samples RGB values and uses K-means to group them. The resulting colors are estimates, and repeated extraction can produce different results.

Which image formats can I use?

PNG, JPG, WebP and other formats supported by your browser decoder. Animated GIFs have frame controls. HEIC and HEIF can use an on-demand local decoder. A listed file extension does not guarantee that every browser can decode the file, including TIFF.

Can I choose a specific GIF frame?

Yes. Use the playback, previous and next controls or timeline to select a frame, then sample or extract its colors. Large animations can consume substantial memory.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

The extractor reads and processes the image locally in this browser. The page still downloads its scripts and, when needed, the HEIC decoder. An already loaded page is not a guarantee that every dependency will be available offline.

Is the image color picker free?

Yes. MORELESS provides it without an account. Practical file limits depend on your browser memory and decoding support.

What can I export?

Download the palette as PNG, JPG, SVG or JSON. Image formats can include HEX and RGB labels; PNG and JPG have adjustable width. You can also copy CSS variables. Exports contain picked and extracted colors, not the original photo.

Technical details

Preview sampling and clustering

The decoded image is drawn to a resized Canvas. Manual sampling reads RGB at the selected preview coordinates. Automatic extraction samples pixels and groups their RGB values with K-means, so cluster colors need not be exact colors from the original image.

Image and GIF decoding

Most formats use the browser image decoder. HEIC and HEIF try browser decoding first, then download the self-hosted libheif fallback to run locally if needed. Animated GIFs are decoded into frames with a timeline. This tool has no dedicated TIFF decoder.

Color formats and export

Colors are available as HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and estimated CMYK without a printer ICC profile. PNG and JPG exports have adjustable width from 120 to 7680 px and height of roughly one-sixth the width. SVG uses a 1200 by 200 coordinate space and scales. JSON and CSS describe the color values.

Processing and storage

Image processing runs locally. Named presets and recent history use shared Color Studio IndexedDB storage in this browser. Large images, stored image data and decoded GIF frames can use substantial memory, and clearing site data can remove saved records.
