Repair

What is wrong, on each file

A file that ends too early, an index that points at the wrong places, a page stream that does not decode, a part that is missing. Each card names it before you repair.

Honest page count

After the repair each file says how many of its pages came through. A page that lost part of its content is kept with what was left.

Three ways in

qpdf rebuilds the file first. When it cannot, the objects are read one by one, and as a last resort the pages a viewer can still draw become pictures.

Checked before you get it

Every repaired file is read back to check that it opens. Verify the downloaded result in your PDF reader.

Keep going

A file another tool cannot read offers Repair on its card, and you carry on where you were.

Frequently asked questions

How do I repair a damaged PDF?

Drop the file, check what its card says, then select Repair and Download.

Will I get every page back?

Every page whose content is still in the file. A file cut short loses the pages after the cut, and the card says how many came through.

Why does a file say No damage?

Nothing in it is broken, so there is nothing to repair. It stays as it is.

Can it open a password protected file?

Enter the password on the file card first. Repair works on the file once it is open.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The files stay in your browser and never leave your device.

Is it free?

Yes. No account and no usage limits.

Technical details

Engines

qpdf 12 compiled to WebAssembly writes the file again. pdf-lib reads the objects one by one when qpdf cannot. pdf.js draws what is left as a last resort.

Content

A page stream that does not decode is kept up to its last whole drawing step. Fonts and images that are gone are replaced so the page still opens.

Check

Every repaired file is checked again for a sound index, streams that decode and parts that are all there, and read back page by page.

Limits

Pages that were never written cannot come back. A file cut short loses its fonts when they sat after the cut, and the text then uses a standard font.
