How to use it

  1. Enter and confirm the password required to open the output PDF.

  2. Choose whether printing, copying and editing are allowed. When restricting a permission, provide the requested permissions password.

  3. Run Protect and download the encrypted files.

  4. Open a downloaded file in a separate PDF reader to confirm that it asks for the intended password.

Require a password to open the PDF

An open password is needed before a reader can view the protected file.

  1. Enter a password in Open password. Use a unique value, not the demonstration password.

  2. Enter exactly the same password in Repeat. Use the eye control if you need to check a typing mistake.

  3. Keep the password somewhere safe. After export, reopen the downloaded PDF and test it.

Set copying, printing and editing permissions

Permissions describe allowed actions in PDF readers. They are different from the password required to open a file.

  1. Clear the actions you want to restrict.

  2. Enter and repeat a permissions password when the additional fields appear.

  3. Keep that password if you will need to restore permissions. Reader support for PDF permissions can vary.

Download and check the result

The result view shows the created output. Downloading a file and checking its contents are separate steps.

  1. Read the output name, count and size in the result view. If processing reported a problem, return to the settings and correct it before continuing.

  2. Choose Download and keep the new file separate from your original. If several outputs are packaged together, open the archive to find them.

  3. Open the downloaded result in a suitable viewer. Check the pages and content affected by this task. Keep your original until you are satisfied.

Output and limits

Each input produces its own protected PDF using the chosen settings. The editor may show an unencrypted preview while the downloaded file is protected. Store the password securely. The editor does not provide password recovery. Reader permissions are distinct from an open password and depend on the receiving software.
